Once upon a time, in the small town of Arcata in California, a rich and successful actor made a promise to a young, attractive and vulnerable girl: I shall love you. Look after you. I don't want to hurt you or oppress you, or deny you in any way. But the promise was broken. After being constantly abused and assaulted, the girl left, and the actor fell into a self destructive spiral: drink, no friends, no work. Now, left alone in a shabby basement flat, he is haunted by that promise, the girl to whom he made it, and himself. Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins stars opposite Kate Nelligan in renowned playwright David Mercer's intense, harrowing screenplay, for which producer Peter Willes received a Silver Medal for Outstanding Creative Achievement from the Royal Television Society. First screened as part of ITV s Sunday Night Drama anthology, The Arcata Promise showcases a tour-de-force performance from one of the world's most significant and respected actors.
Cecilia (Mia Farrow) is a bored waitress who has a womanising slob for a husband and who regularly visits her local cinema in order to escape from the harsh realities of Depression-era America. One night, while rewatching her latest favourite, 'The Purple Rose of Cairo', the film's hero (Jeff Daniels) steps down from the screen and asks her to show him around. A fantasy love affair ensues, but the couple's bliss comes under threat from Cecilia's husband, the bemused actor whose fictional alter-ego has gone walkabouts, and the studio who want their character back on the screen.
No Strings AttachedEmma (Natalie Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher) are life-long friends who almost ruin everything by having sex one morning. In order to protect their friendship, they make a pact to keep their relationship strictly no strings attached . No strings means no jealousy, no expectations, no fighting, no flowers and no baby voices! It means they can do whatever they want, wherever they want, in whatever public place they want, as long as they don’t fall in love. The question becomes – who’s going to fall first? And can their friendship survive?Morning GloryEva Lovelace (Katherine Hepburn) is sparkling in her Oscar winning role of 1934 as a naive, innocent actress who arrives in New York with no friends, no money and no accommodation. But what she does have is a wealth of ambition and the unique ability of a small town girl wanting to make it in a big world. Arriving at the offices of Broadway’s biggest producers, Joseph Sheridan (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.) and Louis Easton (Adolphe Menjou), Eva sits patiently whilst a troupe of theatre lovelies are cast for Broadway’s next big play. Unable to cope with the bitchy put-downs of leading-lady Rita Vernon (Mary Duncan), Eva pleads with the kindly British Shakespearian actor Robert Harley Hedges (C. Aubrey Smith) to take her under his wing and coach her. But Broadway is a world of broken dreams and success is sometimes but a fleeting moment of morning glory…
