Akenfield

Loosely based on Ronald Blythe’s acclaimed book Akenfield: Portrait of an English Village, this unassuming yet powerful film traces three generations of one Suffolk family and their lives in the farming industry. Described as a work of rural realism, and shot in sumptuous widescreen, Akenfield features a cast of non-professional actors drawn from the communities of several Suffolk villages. Featuring improvised dialogue and shot mostly at weekends over the course of a year, the film offers an authentic depiction of country life over the changing seasons. With all three generations – grandfather, father and son – performed by the same actor (local famer Garrow Shand), the film paints a compelling picture of a traditional way of life facing a period of great change, brought about by the industrialisation of the twentieth century. Extras: 2K restoration by the BFI National Archive Original trailer Akenfield Revisited (Rex Pyke, 2004, 40 mins): a documentary looking back at the making of Akenfield Behind the scenes footage of the filming of Akenfield Akenfield at the NFT (Audio only, 2004): onstage interview with Sir Peter Hall, Ronald Blythe and Garrow Shand On-set interview with Ronald Blyth (1974) Interview with actor Garrow Shand (2004) Interview with writer Ronald Blythe (2004) Interview with director Sir Peter Hall (2004) New interview with Rex Pyke, producer of Akenfield (2016) Stills Gallery Fully illustrated booklet with contributions from Sir Peter Hall and Ronald Blythe

Organizing Networks

What are organizations? Where do they come from? How are they transformed and adapted to new situations? In the digital age and in the global network society, traditional theories of the organization can no longer answer these questions. Based on actor-network theory, this book explains organizations as flexible, open networks in which both human and non-human actors enter into socio-technical assemblies by constantly negotiating and re-negotiating programs of action. Organizations are not macro social structures or autonomous systems operating behind the backs of individuals. Instead, they are scalable actor-networks guided by network norms of connectivity, flow, communication, participation, authenticity, and flexibility.

Global, Regional, and Local Dynamics in the Yem...

This international relations study investigates the underlying causes of the Yemen crisis by analyzing the interactions of global, regional, and local actors. At all phases, GCC member states played a key role, from political negotiations amidst street protests in 2011 to formation of an international military coalition in 2015. Using a multi-actor model, the book shows that various actors, whether state or non-state, foreign or domestic, combined to create a disastrous armed conflict and humanitarian crisis. Yemen's tragedy is often blamed on Saudi Arabia and its rivalry with Iran, which is usually defined in sectarian "Sunni-Shia" terms, yet the book presents a more complex picture of what happened due to involvement by many other foreign actors, such as the UAE, UN, UK, US, EU, Russia, China, Turkey, Oman, Qatar, and African states of the Red Sea and Horn of Africa.

Niels Bohr's Complementarity
107,99 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

This book explores the modern physicist Niels Bohr's philosophical thought, specifically his pivotal idea of complementarity, with a focus on the relation between the roles of what he metaphorically calls "spectators" and "actors." It seeks to spell out the structural and historical complexity of the idea of complementarity in terms of different modes of the 'spectator-actor' relation, showing, in particular, that the reorganization of Bohr's thought starting from his 1935 debate with Einstein and his collaborators is characterized by an extension of the dynamic conception of complementarity from non-physical contexts to the very field of quantum theory. Further, linked with this analysis, the book situates Bohr's complementarity in contemporary philosophical context by examining its intersections with post-Heideggerian hermeneutics as well as Derridean deconstruction. Specifically, it points to both the close affinities and the differences between Bohr's idea of the 'actor-spectator' relation and the hermeneutic notion of the relation between "belonging" and "distanciation."
