Year of the Sex Olympics

zzgl. 1,49 € Versand

In the near future, society is split into two strata: The ‘low-drives’ make up the zombie-like majority, mentally anaesthetized by an incessant diet of television, largely consisting of pornography. Television, and by extension the masses, is controlled by the ‘high-drives’, an educated class who remain servile through their perpetual quest for better ratings and audience subjugation. When the low-drives start to become increasingly uninterested in the programming on offer, co-ordinator Ugo Priest (Leonard Rossiter) ends up accidentally happening upon a new entertainment concept…..reality television. First broadcast in 1968 The Year of the Sex Olympics is one of the most original pieces of television drama ever written and would foreshadow the likes of Big Brother and the phenomenon that is Love Island. Extras/Episodes: Feature-length audio commentary by actor Brian Cox: recorded for the BFI’s 2003 release Nigel Kneale in conversation (2000, 71 mins, audio only): the writer looks back over his career with Professor Julian Petley Kim Newman introduction (2003, 5 mins): the writer, critic and broadcaster guides us into the world created by Nigel Kneale and Michael Elliott Joyce Hammond's Costume Designs (2020, 8 mins): a gallery of designs and drawings including the original colour swatches Le Pétomane (1973, 31 mins): a this short comedy biopic of Joseph Pujol, penned by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson and starring Leonard Rossiter Fifty Years of Broadcasting (1972, 5 mins): an episode of the COI’s cinemagazine This Week in Britain, looking at the work of the BBC on its anniversary ***FIRST PRESSING ONLY*** Fully illustrated booklet with new essays by Rob Young, Mark Pilkington and William Dudman (who was a trainee assistant cameraman at the BBC); a biography of Michael Elliott by Philip Kemp, notes on the special features and full credits

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre - Steelbook Ed...

Gold in the hills, avarice in the hearts of men. Two hard-luck drifters (Humphrey Bogart and Tim Holt) and a grizzled prospector (Walter Huston) discover gold. Then greed and paranoia set in. Shot in Mexico, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre cost a then-huge $3 million - and led to a showdown. Jack Warner argued top-billed Bogart shouldn't die before the finale. But John Huston stood his ground and won Academy Awards for his direction and screenplay. And his dad took the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Without awards, but with enduring acclaim, is Bogart's performance, transforming from a likable hobo to a heartless thug simmering in greed. Treasure's place on the American Film Institute's Top 100 American Films list reaffirms it's still a powerful movie. Special Features: Commentary by Eric Lax Introduction by Leonard Maltin - Warner Night at the Movies Key Largo Theatrical Trailer - Warner Night at the Movies Newsreel - Warner Night at the Movies So You Want to be a Detective - Warner Night at the Movies Hot Cross Bunny 91948 Looney Toons Short) - Warner Night at the Movies The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Feature) - Warner Night at the Movies John huston: THe Man, The Movies, The Maverick Discovering Treasure: The Story of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre 8 Ball Bunny (1950 Looney Toons Short) 4/18/1949 Lux Radio Theater Brodcast The Treasue of the Sierra Madre

On The Waterfront - Criterion Collection
34,49 € *
zzgl. 1,49 € Versand

MARLON BRANDO (The Godfather) gives the performance of his career as the tough prizefighter-turnedlongshoreman Terry Malloy in this masterpiece of urban poetry, a raggedly emotional tale of individual failure and institutional corruption. On the Waterfront charts Terry’s deepening moral crisis as he must choose whether to remain loyal to the mob-connected union boss Johnny Friendly (12 Angry Men’s LEE J. COBB) and Johnny’s right-hand man, Terry’s brother, Charley (In the Heat of the Night’s ROD STEIGER), as the authorities close in on them. Driven by the vivid, naturalistic direction of ELIA KAZAN (Gentlemen’s Agreement) and savory, streetwise dialogue by BUDD S CHULBERG (A Face in the Crowd), On the Waterfront was an instant sensation, winning eight Oscars, including for best picture, director, actor, supporting actress (North by Northwest’s EVA MARIE SAINT), and screenplay. Special Edition Features: New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition Alternate presentations of the feature restoration in two additional aspect ratios: 1.85:1 (widescreen) and 1.33:1 (full-screen) Alternate 5.1 surround soundtrack, presented in DTS -HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray edition Commentary featuring authors Richard Schickel and Jeff Young New conversation between filmmaker Martin Scorsese and critic Kent Jones Elia Kazan: Outsider (1982), an hour-long documentary New documentary on the making of the film, featuring interviews with scholar Leo Braudy, critic David Thomson, and others New interview with actress Eva Marie Saint Interview with director Elia Kazan from 2001 Contender, a 2001 documentary on the film’s most famous scene New interview with longshoreman Thomas Hanley, an actor in the film New interview with author James T. Out of This World
18,49 € *
zzgl. 1,49 € Versand

Designed as an offshoot from the legendary Armchair Theatre, Out of this World was devised by television colossus Sydney Newman (Doctor Who, The Avengers) and Irene Shubik (The Wednesday Play, Rumpole of the Bailey) in 1962 to present the science fiction genre at its intelligent best to an adult audience. An anthology series produced by Leonard White, dramatising the cream of literary science fiction, from such writers as Isaac Asimov, Clifford Simak and Philip K. Dick, and using the considerable scriptwriting talents of Clive Exton, Leon Griffiths and Terry Nation, the show was a tremendous success, paving the way for Irene Shubik’s later classic series Out of the Unknown. Hosted by veteran actor Boris Karloff, each episode explored every aspect of the genre – from satire to suspense, from tense drama to sparkling comedy, with the greatest flair and invention that Sixties television could provide. This long awaited release presents the only surviving episode, an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Little Lost Robot, with Maxine Audley as the formidable ‘robopsychologist’ Susan Calvin. Also included are two audio recordings of otherwise lost episodes – Impostor By Philip K Dick, dramatised by Terry Nation who devised the Daleks for Doctor Who the following year, and Cold Equations, Tom Godwin’s suspenseful tale featuring a very young Jane Asher, the impeccable Peter Wyngarde and a screenplay by Clive Exton. Exton’s script for John Wyndhams’ The Dumb Martian, which heralded the series, is also included to download. Extras: Digitally remastered presentation of Little Lost Robot Cold Equations (Paul Bernard, 1962, audio only): adaptation of a short story by Tom Godwin Impostor (Peter Hammond, 1962, audio only): Terry Nation’s adaptation of a Philip K. Dick story Dumb Martian (1962): downloadable PDF of the script for this lost episode, adapted from a story by John Wyndham Illustrated booklet with essay by Oliver Wake, and full credits Cast and Crew: Hosted by Boris Karloff (Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein). Based on the work of Isaac Asimov. Created by Irene Shubik (Out of the Unknown, Armchair Theatre).
