The Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful film franchises in cinematic history. Breaking box office records worldwide, capturing numerous Academy Awards, the trilogy is a breathtaking cinematic achievement and beloved by fans everywhere. For Sean Astin, the call from his agent about the role of Samwise Gamgee couldn´t have come at a better time. His career was at a low point and choice roles were hard to come by. But his 18-month experience in New Zealand with director Peter Jackson and the cast and crew of The Lord of the Rings films would be more than simply a dream come true, it would prove to be the challenge of a lifetime. Though much has been written about the making of the films, the real story of what took place on the set, the harrowing ordeals of the actors and the unspoken controversy and backstage dealings have never been told. More than a companion guide to the Rings films, There and Back Again is filled with stories from the set and of the actors involved that have never before been revealed; an eye-opening look at the blood, sweat, and tears that went into the making of one of the most ambitious films of all time. 1. Narrating his riveting memoir, beloved actor Dick Van Patten reflects on his prolific career, vibrant life, and the people who shaped both. From growing up during the Great Depression when poverty and racially biased ideologies dominated America, to witnessing the advent of television and its subsequent influence on culture, Dick Van Patten´s life is a rich record of change and progress in America and Hollywood. Perhaps best known for his role playing the mild mannered ´´every-dad´´ in 70s sitcom Eight Is Enough, Dick Van Patten has appeared in thousands of television, film, and radio roles viewed by millions of people; he commenced his career by lighting up the Great White Way as a child star alongside Broadway staples such as Tallulah Bankhead, Melvyn Douglas, Alfred Lunt, and Lynn Fontanne, early influences who fueled his relentless thirst for acting and stardom. Van Patten divulges anecdotes both amusing and emotional; among them, he chronicles throwing back drinks with notorious Hollywood producer Robert Evans, forming his family´s close friendship with pop icon Farrah Fawcett, rooming with the legendary Burt Lancaster, and living next door to the eccentric Michael Jackson. Eighty Is Not Enough provides a look back on the evolution of entertainment in a manner rarely glimpsed - straight from the man who experienced it all. 1. Language: English. In the first full biography of actor Sidney Poitier, Aram Goudsouzian analyzes the life and career of a Hollywood legend, from his childhood in the Bahamas to his 2002 Oscar for lifetime achievement. Poitier is a gifted actor, a great American success story, an intriguing personality, and a political symbol; his life and career illuminate America´s racial history. In such films as Lilies of the Field, In the Heat of the Night, and Guess Who´s Coming to Dinner, Poitier´s middle-class, mannered, virtuous screen persona contradicted prevailing film stereotypes of blacks as half-wits, comic servants, or oversexed threats. His screen image and public support of nonviolent integration assuaged the fears of a broad political center, and by 1968, Poitier was voted America´s favorite movie star. Through careful readings of every Poitier film, Goudsouzian shows that Poitier´s characters often made sacrifices for the good of whites and rarely displayed sexuality. As the only black leading man during the civil rights era, Poitier chose roles and public positions that negotiated the struggle for dignity. By 1970, times had changed and Poitier was the target of a backlash from film critics and black radicals, as the new heroes of ´´blaxploitation´´ movies reversed the Poitier model. In the 1970s, Poitier shifted his considerable talents toward directing, starring in, and producing popular movies that employed many African Americans, both on and off screen. After a long hiatus, he returned to starring roles in the late 1980s. More recently, the film industry has reappraised his career, and Poitier has received numerous honors recognizing his multi-faceted work for black equality in Hollywood. As this biography affirms, Poitier remains one of American popular culture´s foremost symbols of the possibilities for and limits of racial equality. 1. Language: English. Narrator: J. D. Jackson. The downloadable audiobook edition of Andrew Feinstein´s powerful exposé, The Shadow World: Inside the Global Arms Trade, complete and unabridged and read by the actor Gildart Jackson. Pulling back the curtain on the secretive world of the global arms trade, Andrew Feinstein reveals the corruption and the cover-ups behind weapons deals ranging from the largest in history - between the British and Saudi governments - to BAE´s controversial transactions in South Africa, Tanzania and eastern Europe, and the revolving-door relationships that characterise the US Congressional-Military-Industrial Complex. He exposes in forensic detail both the formal government-to-government trade in arms and the shadow world of illicit weapons dealing - and lays bare the shocking and inextricable links between the two. The Shadow World places us in the midst of the arms trade´s dramatic wheeling and dealing, ranging from corporate boardrooms to seedy out-of-the-way hotels via far-flung offshore havens, and reveals the profound danger this network represents to all of us. 1.
