This is a story from the In the Ravine and Other Stories collection. Anton Chekhov, one of the finest masters of what is acknowledged as a difficult genre. There is the richly comic "Oh! The Public" about a hassled ticket inspector, a wry look at morals and manners in "The Chorus Girl"; and the melancholic tale of a cab driver in "Misery". Perhaps the finest of all is the novella "In The Ravine"; a minutely observed look at life in a village through the eyes of one family. All the characters come to life with their foibles, their strengths, and their hopes. Kenneth Branagh uses his natural talent for characterisation to bring this village to life. The other short stories in this collection are: "The Trousseau"; "A Story Without a Title"; "Children"; "Fat and Thin"; "The Beggar"; "Hush!"; "The Orator"; and "An Actor´s End". 1. What´s unusual about this audiobook on acting? Jesse Vint wrote this book because he found, strangely enough, almost no books about film acting by people who have actually made a living at acting in film. Almost all are written by non-professional actors. It´s tantamount to learning from the sailor who has never been to sea, the soldier who has never been to war, or the cowboy who has never ridden a horse. In other words, they are coffee-shop geniuses. Jesse is a veteran of over 100 films and television shows. He has also produced, directed, and written full-length feature films that have played throughout the world. Quote from Oscar Nominee, David Carradine, from his book about the shooting of Quentin Tarantino´s film, Kill Bill: ´´Jesse Vint is a very cool and wise dude.´´ Jesse shows actors how to internalize. Once they listen to this audiobook, they will have a clarity about acting and what it is that they have never had before, regardless of how long they´ve studied. Jesse covers subjects such as: What makes a star Traps in acting Rehearsals The essence of script analysis: moving the information from head to heart Locating your hot buttons Strategy for stressful auditions The problem of anticipation Preparation before the director says ´´action´´ Jesse says that the writer provides the words, the director is the cinematic storyteller, and it is the actor´s job to activate his soul in a manner consistent with the character. That is what an actor gets paid for. An actor can speak with an accent, walk with a limp, or strap on a false nose, but these things mean absolutely nothing if the part is not internalized. If the actor does these things without internalizing, then that´s not acting - that´s Halloween. A movie is not everyday life - it is a compression of highly intense experiences. An actor must know the engine that´s... 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jesse Vint. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/104401/bk_acx0_104401_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

David Barry¿s autobiography spans almost five decades of theatre, film and television experience. As a 14-year-old he toured Europe with Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, in one of the most prestigious post-war theatre tours. Vivien Leigh took a shine to him and he saw both sides of her complex character first hand. One minute she was sweetness and light, and the next she became a screaming harridan as she publicly berated Sir Laurence. In his early twenties, he starred as Frankie Abbott in Please, Sir! and Fenn Street Gang, and those days are recounted with great humour. Hilarious events unfold as he describes working with dodgy producers and argumentative actors. His is a story that covers everything from the pitfalls of working in live television to performing with hard drinking actors. 1. Language: English. Narrator: David Barry. In this riveting and surprising personal history, John Lithgow shares a backstage view of his own struggle, crisis, and discovery, revealing the early life and career that took place out of the public eye. Above all Lithgow’s memoir is a tribute to his most important influence: his father, Arthur Lithgow, who, as an actor, director, producer, and great lover of Shakespeare, brought theater to John’s boyhood. From bedtime stories to Arthur’s illustrious productions, performance and storytelling were constant and cherished parts of family life. Drama details with poignancy and sharp recollection the moments that introduced a budding young actor to the undeniable power of theater. Before Lithgow gained fame with films like The World According to Garp and television shows like 3rd Rock from the Sun, his early years were full of scenes both hilarious and bittersweet. His ruminations on the nature of theater, film acting, and storytelling cut to the heart of why actors are driven to perform, and why people are driven to watch them do it. Lithgow chronicles the harrowing moments of his past, reflecting with moving candor on friends made and lost, mistakes large and small, and the powerful love of a father who set him on the road to a life onstage. Illuminating, funny, affecting, and thoroughly engrossing, Drama raises the curtain on the making of one of our most beloved actors. 1. Language: English. Narrator: John Lithgow. Famed and acclaimed for his starring role as Admiral Firmus Piett in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Ken Colley, who was born in Manchester, England, in 1937, knew from a very early age that he was already an actor. It was not until he had completed his mandatory two years with the National Service in the UK, when he was based in Cyprus during the Suez Crisis, that Ken, in his mid-20s, became an Assistant Stage Manager with a weekly repertory company in Bromley, Kent, England. He stayed with them for three months after which he secured his first role in a television series called Ghost Squad. He then went on to join a group of players called ´´The Living Theatre Company´´ where he stayed for the next 18 months. Ken¿s breakthrough into cinema came via Michael Crawford who, having witnessed his professional expertise as an actor, recommended that he play the featuring role of a chauffeur in Michael Winner¿s film The Jokers. In The Dance of the Seven Veils, the film director, Ken Russell, had asked Ken to play the role of Hitler, but in a Chaplinesque fashion. The film was being made for television and, when completed, was only aired once because of its outrageous content. During his long acting career, which spans five decades, Ken has worked with many famous actors including Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud; he was also involved with Laurence Olivier¿s National Theatre company at the Old Vic in London and the Monty Python team. Ken has appeared in countless television productions, plays, and films such as The Music Lovers, The Devils, Mahler, Lisztomania, Les Miserables, Measure for Measure, Pennies from Heaven, The Life of Brian, Firefox, Mussolini: The Untold Story, The Whistleblower, Casanova, The Rainbow, Inspector Morse, and Midsomer Murders, to name but a few.
