´´Wesley Hunt was always considered strange.´´ And so this quirky, offbeat short story by the witty and wonderful Canadian author and actor Robert Jadah begins. This is a dotty, somewhat satirical, and rather musical version of Lewis Carroll´s work, performed by Canadian and British actresses and actors in Calgary, Alberta. See if you can spot your own character in this production. Are you the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, or perhaps The Walrus? You could even be all three! The Little Match-Girl is a very sad tale of a little girl who had to sell matches - even in the snow - to keep alive. 1. Language: English. Narrator: full cast. In 2005, Anna Massey was awarded a CBE for services to drama.Daughter of the Canadian actor, Raymond Massey (perhaps best-known for his role as Dr Gillespie in the TV series Dr Killdare), and Adrianne Allen (also a very successful stage actress), drama was in her blood. Her brother, Daniel, was a much-acclaimed actor. And even her godfather was one of the great film directors of all time - John Ford.Anna´s first marriage was to Jeremy Brett, famous in his later years for his elegantly febrile performance on television as Sherlock Holmes. They had a son, David, together. But it was not a happy relationship and ended in divorce. In fact, family life was never easy or straightforward. Raymond fled the roost for the United States when Anna was very little, and married again. Adrianne was the most marvellous hostess who filled the house with an exotic mixture of guests, but, as a child, crucial emotional support was supplied by Nanny, who remained with Anna until her death. From her stage debut in The Reluctant Debutante to her performance in Michael Powell´s notorious film, Peeping Tom, on through TV successes like The Pallisers and Hotel du Lac to a range of work in radio, Anna Massey has enjoyed the most remarkable career. And a whole host of extraordinary, often highly eccentric characters make their entrances and exits during its course. On and off set or stage, there are encounters with the theatrical knights, Olivier, Redgrave, Richardson and Gielgud. Noel Coward takes more than one bow. Great friendships are formed with fellow actors like Alan Rickman, Alec McCowen, Dame Judi Dench, and the playwright, David Hare. And there are inevitable difficulties with directors like Otto Preminger. Anna also has to play the part of hostess to the Duke of Edinburgh - in real life. After all the inevitable vicissitudes and upsets, Anna Massey ends her book with the story of personal happines... 1. An episode of a light-hearted mystery series, with American, Canadian, and British actresses and actors. Adam Grant, or so his name appears to be, finds himself in a hotel room with a person he doesn´t recognise: himself. His attempts to find out who he is, embroil him in a number of strange and sometimes dangerous situations in many parts of the world. (As this script was written in the 1970s, one may guess that its main theme was very attractive to other authors!) 1. Language: English. Narrator: Audioscape Players. Within this collection of short stories you will find a variety of monsters - a whole consternation of them, to use the collective noun. In these tales, a creature of make-believe proves difficult to disbelieve, a trickster-god takes an unkindly interest in witnesses, eldritch horrors can be summoned with a quilt, frustrated wolves face dangerous prey, the angel of death wears a plaid sport coat, wise old women are to be feared and heeded, Elvis remains king, the corpses of legends can be perilous to have around, and where one of the most powerful and potentially dangerous objects in the world is a fork. Eric Fritzius is writer, playwright, teacher, and actor of stage, screen and US and Canadian basic cable. A rollicking, rich portrait of a life. And what a life! By one of today’s greatest living actors. He was born a Canadian on a Friday the 13th in 1929 - the year of the Crash. His boyhood was one of privilege: an ancestor was a Governor General; his great-grandfather Sir John Abbott was Canada’s third prime minister and owned railroads. There were steam yachts, mansions, and a life of Victorian gentility and somewhat cluttered splendor. Plummer tells how ´´this young bilingual wastrel, incurably romantic, spoiled rotten, tore himself away from the ski slopes to break into the big bad world of theatre, not from the streets up but from an Edwardian living room down,´´ and writes of his early acting days as an 18-year-old playing the lead in Shakespeare’s Cymbeline, directed by the legendary Komisarjevsky of Moscow’s Imperial Theatre. We see his glorious New York of the ´50s, where life began at midnight, with the likes of Arthur Miller, Carson McCullers, Tennessee Williams, and Paddy Chayefsky, and how Plummer’s own Broadway world developed and swept him along through the last Golden Age the American Theatre would ever remember... how the sublime Ruth Chatterton (´´she might have been created by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Sinclair Lewis´´) introduced him to the right people in New York... how Miss Eva Le Gallienne gave Plummer his Broadway debut at 25 in The Starcross Story (´´It opened and closed in one night! One solitary night! But what a night!´´). He writes about Miss Katherine Cornell (the last stage star to travel by private train), who, with her husband, Guthrie McClintic, added to what experience Plummer had the necessary gloss, spit, and polish to take him to the next level. Guthrie bundled Plummer off to Paris for a production of Medea, opposite Dame Judith Anderson (´´a little Tasmanian devil...who with one look could turn an audience to stone´´). Plummer writes about the great producers with whom h... 1. Language: English. Narrator: Christopher Plummer. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/rand/003326/bk_rand_003326_sample.mp3. A mission that takes him from the finest of English racecourses to the wild Canadian interior, on a luxury transcontinental train journey to end them all. On board, a troupe of actors are playing out a murder mystery to amuse their wealthy passengers. Ideal cover for a secret investigator with secrets of his own. And ideal cover, as it turns out, for an ice cool blackmailer with murder on his mind. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tony Britton. Francis Cornish was always good at keeping secrets. From the well-hidden family secret of his childhood to his mysterious encounters with a small-town embalmer, an expert art restorer, a Bavarian countess, and various masters of espionage, the events in Francis´ life were not always what they seemed. This wonderfully ingenious portrait of an art expert and collector of international renown is told in stylish, elegant prose and endowed with lavish portions of Davies´ wit and wisdom. Robertson Davies (1913 - 1995) was an internationally acclaimed author, actor, publisher, and, finally, professor at the University of Toronto. The author of 12 novels and several volumes of essays and plays, he was the first Canadian to be inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. 1. Language: English.
