So much for the economy, stupid: birth control is currently the hot button issue of the campaign season. Rush Limbaugh’s noxious remarks to Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke (whom he called a ´´slut´´ and ´´prostitute´´ for testifying in support of contraception coverage, then demanded that she make and post sex videos) led to a rare apology. Liberals, however, insist that his attack is part and parcel of a conservative ´´war on women” that includes restrictions on abortion, controversy over Planned Parenthood, and opposition to women in combat. Then, we’ve always heard the television brought Americans together. Now a lot of what’s on just makes us mad at each other. Sociologist Max Kilger says you can tell a person’s politics by the television they watch. If you’re a CSI junkie, you likely vote conservative: ´´It’s got good structure. It’s got good closure. There’s often a lot of decisiveness about what action should be to be taken.” If you like Weeds, you’re probably a liberal: ´´Liberal comedies tend to either mock traditional things or produce unusual or unexpected kinds of situations.” After that, Will Ferrell can make just about anything funny: playing the flute, negotiating with a toddler, just standing around in his underpants. After seven years on Saturday Night Live, he took his impersonation of George W. Bush to Broadway in a one-man show. For his latest movie, he joined a cast of Mexican actors for a role performed entirely in Spanish. Casa de mi Padre is the big-screen version of a shoddy telenovela, with a cast led by Diego Luna.Following that, last month, a giant of folk music died, the 93-year-old fiddler Joe Thompson. He was instrumental in carrying a very old tradition of African American string band music into the 21st century, and inspiring young proteges like the Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops. Desert Blueshift is metaphysical science fiction romance novel incorporating elements of change, growth, and expansion of consciousness. It is also an action adventure and a story of love. A mysterious sphere lands in the Arizona desert. The trail of ash and sparks that follows the sphere through the atmosphere wreaks havoc in San Diego, drawing together a homeless man, Harley, and a doctor, Janet, as they take refuge in the same doorway away from the falling embers. The trail of embers is also seen further to the east by an actor escaping from hollywood, and a waitress in the desert town of Gila Bend. The two meet when the actor, Mitch, comes in to the restaurant where the waitress works. The waitress, Ginny, is concerned for her friend and colleague, Sally, who misses work without calling in. Ginny goes to Sally´s house after work, only to find her held captive by Sally´s husband. He decides to take the two women into the desert to ´put them out of his misery. As Mitch is driving east after his chance encounter with Ginny, he thinks of her and suddenly hears a voice in his head telling him that Ginny needs his help, and he returns to Gila Bend. There, he encounters a dog named Boozer who becomes his cab-mate as together they search Ginny. When the sphere crashes to earth in the desert, it destroys the tent housing a religious revival. The preacher escapes. The parishioners don´t. The scam artist preacher flees, but is struck by a singular episode of guilty conscience. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Vasicek. When Morgan Shaw crept into the hold of an old pirate ship replica at San Diego´s annual Tall Ship Festival, her only intention was to avoid the guy who had just dumped her and who was now boarding the ship with two women on his arm. What she didn´t expect was to wake up aboard a real pirate ship 300 years in the past. But of course, it wasn´t real. Her wealthy father had obviously staged it all in an effort to get her mind off her upcoming chemo. Or had he? Pirate Rowan Dutton seeks enough treasure to repay a debt to his sister and reinstate the Dutton name among British Jamaican society. He is but one major haul away from accomplishing his goal when a strange woman appears on his ship and causes him to lose his prey. Despite his anger, he is enthralled with the little minx, her strange clothing, odd speech, and her insistence that they are all actors playing a charade paid for by her father. Yet when the brazen little lady divulges Rowan´s secret to a longtime nemesis, events are triggered that could cost them both their lives and change the course of history forever. 1. The annual comics extravaganza Comic-Con International is underway, with 125,000 fans geeking out at the San Diego Convention Center. And that doesn’t count all the film and TV stars on hand to court them: from Robert Downey, Jr., talking up Iron Man 3 to HBO producers peddling Game of Thrones. Next, it isn’t easy to put a fresh spin on A Streetcar Named Desire, one of the most acclaimed plays in American theatre, with its caricatured Brando scream of ´´Stella!” A new production on Broadway aims to shake things up, putting black and Latino actors in the lead roles. Then, a couple years ago, Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win an Oscar for directing The Hurt Locker. It wasn’t quite the tipping point for women many in the industry had hoped for: of the 250 major movies that came out last year in the US, women directed only 5% of them. But when it comes to commercial and critical breakthroughs among independent films, a shift seems to be happening. After that, a couple weeks ago, the music critic Tim Page posted a shortlist on Facebook of ´´perfectly good music that I never need to hear again.” He included Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, acts 1, 2, and 4 of Puccini’s La Boheme, Dave Brubeck’s ´´Take Five,´´ and the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper´s Lonely Heart´s Club Band. And finally, Dirty Projectors manage to be both avant-garde and accessible — the band plays experimental rock you can still dance to. They’ve collaborated with Bjork and David Byrne, and been covered by Solange Knowles (sister of Beyonce). [Broadcast Date: July 14, 2012] 1. Language: English. Narrator: Kurt Andersen.
